Sara / Germany. Being trapped in the euro crisis, the dismantling of democracy, the NSA  National Security Agency scandals, amongst others – Europe is facing vital challenges! Despite large reforms are missing on the political agenda, civil society movements and grassroots laboratory for alternatives are opening up. People start organizing themselves and build networks using alternative and innovative scopes of actions for nonviolence, participation and civil disobedience. Yet, there are differences in activism. While, for instance, movements in Barcelona and Sicily have strongly developed and reach many citizens, it seems that alternative protest for social change in Germany is still lacking bigger support. One reason certainly is that many people still feel too comfortable economically and are separated from socially and economically poorer parts of society to go on the streets for social change in Germany.

Sara / Deutschland. Gefangen in der Euro-Krise, dem Abbau der Demokratie, den NSA-Skandalen National Security Agency  u.a. – Europa steht vor großen Herausforderungen! Obwohl große Reformen auf der politischen Agenda fehlen, öffnen sich zivilgesellschaftliche Bewegungen und Graswurzellabore für Alternativen. Die Menschen beginnen, sich selbst zu organisieren und Netzwerke aufzubauen, indem sie alternative und innovative Aktionsmöglichkeiten für Gewaltlosigkeit, Partizipation und zivilen Ungehorsam nutzen. Dennoch gibt es Unterschiede im Aktivismus. Während sich beispielsweise die Bewegungen in Barcelona und Sizilien stark entwickelt haben und viele Bürgerinnen und Bürger erreichen, scheint es, dass alternativer Protest für sozialen Wandel in Deutschland noch keinen größeren Rückhalt hat. Ein Grund dafür ist sicherlich, dass sich viele Menschen wirtschaftlich noch zu wohl fühlen und von den sozial und wirtschaftlich ärmeren Teilen der Gesellschaft abgegrenzt sind, um für soziale Veränderungen in Deutschland auf die Straße zu gehen.

Consequently, how can we activate a discourse regarding alternatives to the existing democratic processes in our country? And, is our democratic system which is torn between the dismantling of democracy and the experiment of new ways able to open up for more participation and consensus-oriented decision-making? This was discussed during one of the international youth congresses of the DiM-network in Barcelona in 2013. A new facet of the DiM activism was born, namely the Forum Democracy in Motion, aiming at spreading the ideas of new ways of democracy in Hanover. The goal of the Forum is both to point out to the citizens of Hanover how social change is done elsewhere and to actively give them fruit for thought to stimulate a new and innovative discourse.

Wie können wir also einen Diskurs über Alternativen zu den bestehenden demokratischen Verfahren in unserem Land anregen? Und ist unser demokratisches System, das zwischen dem Abbau der Demokratie und dem Experiment neuer Wege hin- und hergerissen ist, in der Lage, sich für mehr Partizipation und konsensorientierte Entscheidungsfindung zu öffnen? Dies wurde auf einem der internationalen Jugendkongresse des DiM-Netzwerks in Barcelona 2013 diskutiert. Eine neue Facette des DiM–Aktivismus wurde geboren, nämlich das Forum Democracy in Motion, das darauf abzielt, die Ideen von neuen Wegen der Demokratie in Hannover zu verbreiten. Ziel des Forums ist es, den Bürgerinnen und Bürgern Hannovers aufzuzeigen, wie anderswo gesellschaftlicher Wandel vollzogen wird, und ihnen aktiv Denkanstöße zu geben, um einen neuen und innovativen Diskurs anzuregen.

Since autumn 2013, the DiM-Team-Hanover has organized two Forums and gave the floor to Catalan and Italian activists, who shared their experience with horizontal political movements and nonviolent actions. Our guests from Barcelona (NOVACT) gave an insight in the creation of the citizens’ movement party Partido X and the transformation of the Catalan parliament, both for the sake of strengthening horizontal democratic processes. Two Italian activists from Catania/Rome (Un Ponte per…) talked about NO MUOS as a Sicilian grassroots movement and about the Charter of Lampedusa promoting an immigration policy of humanity.

Seit Herbst 2013 hat das DiM-Team-Hannover zwei Foren organisiert und katalanische und italienische Aktivisten zu Wort kommen lassen, die ihre Erfahrungen mit horizontalen politischen Bewegungen und gewaltfreien Aktionen teilten. Unsere Gäste aus Barcelona (NOVACT) gaben einen Einblick in die Gründung der Bürgerbewegungspartei Partido X und die Umgestaltung des katalanischen Parlaments, beides mit dem Ziel, horizontale demokratische Prozesse zu stärken. Zwei italienische Aktivisten aus Catania/Rom (Un Ponte per…) sprachen über NO MUOS als sizilianische Graswurzelbewegung und über die Charta von Lampedusa, die eine Einwanderungspolitik der Menschlichkeit fördert.

During the planning and the Forum itself the DiM-team thereby tries to create an atmosphere of horizontal activism where everyone can join and express herself/ himself. Besides the input by and the discussion with the activists art (acting, literature, movie, music, etc.) connected to the issues is incorporated into the Forum. Since there are many innovative ways of nonviolent political activism we want to share them with others. As the first two Forums have been successful there will be two more to come in 2014 and several more in 2015. The Forum in June 2014, for instance, brings Greece and their discourse on democracy, freedom and poverty to Hanover.

Während der Planung und des Forums selbst versucht das DiM-Team, eine Atmosphäre des horizontalen Aktivismus zu schaffen, in der jeder mitmachen und sich ausdrücken kann. Neben dem Input von und der Diskussion mit den Aktivist*nnen wird auch Kunst (Schauspiel, Literatur, Film, Musik, etc.) mit Bezug zu den Themen in das Forum integriert. Da es viele innovative Wege des gewaltfreien politischen Aktivismus gibt, wollen wir sie mit anderen teilen. Da die ersten beiden Foren erfolgreich verlaufen sind, wird es 2014 zwei weitere geben und 2015 mehrere weitere. Das Forum im Juni 2014 bringt zum Beispiel Griechenland und seinen Diskurs über Demokratie, Freiheit und Armut nach Hannover.
